The past 2.5 years at Totoli have been an adventurous and inspiring journey, in which the idea of creating a safe and dedicated digital world for all families with young children became a reality when we launched our app in December 2022. Our international team from over 14 nations, working across 6 countries and over half of them being parents themselves, was passionately committed to this mission.

With the adverse development in the early-stage funding markets in 2022, we faced a new reality. We adapted quickly and trimmed the scope of our first product drastically. Rather than releasing an integrated tablet as our first product, we decided to launch our mobile application to the AppStore first, so that we could reduce capital requirements and time-to-market. Despite all strategic measures taken, the amazing and continuous support from our lead investor Blue Yard, our angel investors, content partners, other business partners as well as our early users and - first and foremost - the tireless work of our incredible team, we have not been able to build a large enough user base in the short period to secure sufficient external funding.

Our journey has come to and end. While we no longer develop our product further, we built a new version of Totoli that will allow your children to continue using the app for the coming months - free of charge. Our video streaming service will unfortunately be shut down, but the interactive games will remains fully available for the time being. All you need to do is update the app to get the new free version (without videos).

Our advisors

Totoli co-founder Philipp Hartmann knows the struggle of regulating screen time all too well. After many frustrating discussions with his young daughter, he asked himself: How can we support children to develop a healthy relationship with the digital world, nurture their skills and still keep their magic? In doing so, can we be cool, responsible parents? Yes we can! Learn more about Totoli's origin story and our mission. As Philipp extensively researched the range of digital offers for children, he realized that none of the technologies met his demands for child-friendly, sophisticated and convenient entertainment. He was motivated to find a solution himself. Together with his college friend, the entrepreneur Adham El Muntasser, they tested hardware-based concepts and were delighted to find, that there were actually viable paths for their ideas. They founded Totoli in 2021, and shortly afterwards CTO Steinunn Arnardottir joined the team to complete the perfect trio. What started as a small side project quickly grew into a rapidly blossoming company. Today, Totoli connects people with diverse backgrounds and stories. What unites us is the vision of giving small children carefree and safe access to the digital world. And quite incidentally, we also turn our idea of ​​a harmonious and modern working environment into reality.

The thoughtful digital app for happy kids

Karen Mitrega, a creative producer and children’s programme developer, is the former head of children’s content at RTL Disney. Responsible for the development, co-production and acquisition of serial and magazine programmes there, Karen has used her skills as a production manager on several international feature films and now supports young producers in developing new children’s shows.

Icelandic at heart, born in France and now based in Denmark, Alexandra loves languages and international environments. A mother of three and author of short stories for children, Alexandra is passionate about child development and holds a Master’s degree in pedagogical psychology. Her deep fascination with the process of growing up brought her to Totoli.

Passionate about digitalisation – from a scientific perspective — Astrid is a professor for Media Psychology at the University of Wuerzburg in Germany. Keen to find out why, how and to what effect we use digital media, Astrid joined Totoli as an advisor to help children develop skills to competently navigate our digital world.

Carsten served as programme director at the German broadcaster, SuperRTL, shaping it into the top television outlet for children’s programming. He joined Totoli as an expert and advisor after trying the product for the first time — and seeing the smile it brought to his son’s face. 

Theo grew up in Bucharest and put his roots down in Berlin as a 22 year old student. He has a background in the humanities and worked in academia for a couple of years prior to transitioning to the tech industry. Before joining Lottie, he worked as a software developer for the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities, camping.info and scoutbee.

Before joining Lottie, Rafael worked for six years as a backend developer at trivago. There he gathered experience in multiple aspects of the software development process. Looking for a new adventure and just having become a father, he was caught by Lottie's vision of helping children and parents in finding a healthy relationship with technology.

When Philipp and his wife Markéta were  confronted with the challenges of raising two children in an increasingly  digital world, they quickly observed the apparent lack of solutions and  decided to do something about it! Prior to Lottie, Philipp was COO at  Pitch.com, ran Product at Raisin.com, and was an investor at Index  Ventures.

Before joining Lottie Christoph has spent the past 15 years working as a Software Developer and different leadership positions across multiple industries, from Mobile Gaming, Telcos to the Music Industry. When not spending time with his kids you can probably find Christoph on his bike or running at the old Tempelhof airfield.

With family roots in Germany, Lisa took the plunge and left South Africa to move to Munich in 2016. She has worked as a Software Developer for the last 15 years across various industries, including eLearning and eMobility. Before joining Lottie, she spent a decade working at start-up companies and enjoys being a part of a growing team where every member can make a difference.

Natalia is a backend engineer based in Berlin, whose life has always orbited around technology and music. Before joining Lottie she has worked as a developer and product manager for a classical music streaming service, as a sound artist developing sound installations, and as a jazz saxophonist.

Mykola was born and lives in Ukraine. Android development is his passion in life and he has been working as an Android developer since 2012. He is a father of two boys. Together with his family he loves to travel, exploring local areas in Ukraine - and the World!

Prior to Lottie, Julian has worked in music streaming companies such as SoundCloud and IDAGIO. He has spent several years analyzing audio and data before moving into Engineering Management. As a parent of two, he is excited to be part of crafting great digital experiences for kids.

Natalia was born in Italy and grew up in the Italian countryside near the Adriatic Sea. She studied Graphic and Media Design and landed in the UX/UI world 7 years ago when she moved to Berlin to work for Blinkist, a book-summarizing subscription service. Natalia loves running & cycling, but also drawing, reading, and spending time with her son.

Nathalie is originally from Frankfurt am Main and moved to Berlin a year ago to study Interaction Design at CODE University. She discovered her passion for digital design during her apprenticeship as a media designer in a small advertising agency. To get inspired and recharge, Nathalie loves to travel the world whenever she can.

Born in Berlin, Sophie is currently finishing her bachelor’s degree in English philology, pedagogy & political sciences. She joined Lottie to support the product team's user testing. Due to her experiences as an au pair after finishing high school, Sophie is especially passionate about safe and educational digital products for children.

Natalia is an Android Developer based in Poland. Prior to Lottie, she has spent several years working for digital agencies and worked for an Austrian music education startup called Fretello. As she was always passionate about developing educational apps for kids, she happily joined Lottie on the mission to help kids navigate the digital world.

Wasif was born in Pakistan and has been curious about computers and the internet since early childhood. He is passionate about building reliable and secure backend systems. He has been living in Berlin for 9 years and has worked for various tech startups such as Wooga, GameAnalytics, EyeEm. He likes to play snooker and is always happy to meet Street Fighter and Super Mario enthusiasts.

Carolin has a BSc in media & communication from the University of Wuerzburg and is currently working on her Master's thesis. Her research focus is the psychological perspective on children's digital literacy and media use under the direction of Astrid Carolus. Having been to primary school in the US, Carolin is passionate about the English language and loves landscape photography. At Lottie, Carolin helps build our educational content strategy on a strong scientific foundation.

Born and raised in California, Kee graduated from University of California, Berkeley, with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. Living in San Francisco, Kee was developing and engineering global consumer electronics products with Google, Fitbit, and Apple. Looking for a new adventure, Kee, his wife and their twin 4 year old boys followed their German roots and moved to Bavaria at the end of 2019. Kee contributes to the Lottie mission his wealth of experience in bringing successful consumer electronics products to market.

Made in France, Pascal studied Industrial Design in India and had the chance to work with some top design firms across the US and EU. He’s is a long time La Chouffe lover and a Jimi Hendrix enthusiast among other things. He’s now committed to help bring Lottie to life across all design aspects!

Made in Belgium, Louise has a master in Business Engineering & International Management, which led her to live in London & Sao Paulo before landing in the capital of techno, durums & black clothing: Berlin. Louise has a generalist profile, with a passion for developing businesses from the early-stages and working with innovative technologies.

Adham has spent the past 14 years in leadership positions across 4 different industries, ranging from real estate, over fashion ecommerce, to private equity and investment banking. He loves spending his free time with his wife and little daughter - and/or on his bicycle roaming around (and out of) town.

Originally from Bavaria, Lucia moved to Berlin 14 years ago and is still very much in love with the city. She started her career in PR, but quickly found her passion in Recruitment and HR and worked for companies such as Rocket Internet and BCG Digital Ventures. Giving people the opportunity to find jobs they love and walk along with them becoming and remaining happy employees, just makes her happy. She is also very much into empathetic leadership and defines coaching & meditation not only as a tool but rather as a mindset.

Thibault's natural curiosity followed him throughout his studies from France to India and all the way to Sweden where he graduated from Umeå Design School. After a few years creating inspiring work at studios like DCA and Teague, he started exploring a nomadic lifestyle to reconcile his environmental ethics and his creative passion.

Originally from the UK and now settled in Berlin, Thom has 15 years of experience leading marketing at startups.  Generally as the first marketing lead, Thom enjoys laying the foundation for scalable and sustainable growth, developing go-to-market strategies, and creating outstanding brands.

Steinunn has over 10 years of experience from the Music Tech industry - prior to Lottie she worked on digital tools for music creators and DJs and led Engineering teams at Native Instruments. More recently as a parent of two, she was painfully missing the safe space for children to be creators and learners in the digital world and with Lottie she is passionate about changing that situation for good.

Juha has 12 years of experience in leading cross-functional teams in envisioning, building and growing delightful digital products. With an educational background in engineering and business, he started his career in the video gaming industry and worked on properties with millions of daily users at Wooga (Berlin) and Digital Chocolate (Helsinki & Barcelona). Prior to joining Lottie, Juha worked at the innovation and venturing arm of Boston Consulting Group as a venture CPO.

Jens started developing Android apps in 2008. Since then he worked at a couple of start-ups of different sizes in China, Canada, and Sweden but most of the time in Berlin where he was also born. Jens enjoys all kinds of sports such as hockey, football, running, and yoga as well as gaming, reading, and watching movies.

Magnus enjoys building digital products. Being a parent of two he knows first hand how important it is to build better digital experiences for children so when the opportunity came to join Lottie the choice was obvious.

Morgan is originally from Texas and moved to Germany last year to study Human-Computer Interaction. She completed her Bachelor’s in Media Design and Production at Indiana University Bloomington, working on projects in web, animation & video games. 

With a background in advertising, brand marketing and cultural management Kyra has worked between Berlin, Zurich and Santiago de Chile. Kyra has a big fascination for the world of playing and learning and is both: a parent and a kid at heart.

Alex is an American/Swiss/Latvian who grew up in the forest of Connecticut and moved to Berlin in 2017. He has worked as a web developer, project manager, agile coach, consultant, product manager, and portfolio manager, and most recently he was Director of Planning + Execution at Native Instruments.

Moses is originally from Nigeria! and has been a QA engineer since 2015. He has a Bachelor's degree in Economics and a Masters's degree in Strategic Business Management. He has experience working in startups and loves the thrill that comes with the fast pace nature of startup culture.
