The past 2.5 years at Totoli have been an adventurous and inspiring journey, in which the idea of creating a safe and dedicated digital world for all families with young children became a reality when we launched our app in December 2022. Our international team from over 14 nations, working across 6 countries and over half of them being parents themselves, was passionately committed to this mission.

With the adverse development in the early-stage funding markets in 2022, we faced a new reality. We adapted quickly and trimmed the scope of our first product drastically. Rather than releasing an integrated tablet as our first product, we decided to launch our mobile application to the AppStore first, so that we could reduce capital requirements and time-to-market. Despite all strategic measures taken, the amazing and continuous support from our lead investor Blue Yard, our angel investors, content partners, other business partners as well as our early users and - first and foremost - the tireless work of our incredible team, we have not been able to build a large enough user base in the short period to secure sufficient external funding.

Our journey has come to and end. While we no longer develop our product further, we built a new version of Totoli that will allow your children to continue using the app for the coming months - free of charge. Our video streaming service will unfortunately be shut down, but the interactive games will remains fully available for the time being. All you need to do is update the app to get the new free version (without videos).

If your child shows interest in any of the STEM fields, then there are many obvious next steps in both educational and career development. However, even if your child doesn’t decide on software engineering as a career, for example, there are still many benefits of a STEM education. The critical thinking and problem solving skills that are constantly reinforced in STEM education will find many useful applications in other careers as well.

The relationship between children and technology is one of the most important topics we face as parents today. We know that we’re surrounded by devices, between our smartphones, tablets, smart TVs, and laptops. We consume content and engage with social media on a daily basis. We see emerging technology in the news like the metaverse and social trends that come and go out of nowhere. How do we make sense of all of this technology, and how do we weigh the benefits and risks of technology for our children?

There are no simple answers for these questions, but we’ve dug into the research and our own experiences to arrive at a few concrete recommendations. Technology has become an indispensable feature of our children’s home and school lives, and something we’ve learned to use consciously to help our kids participate in the digital world in a healthy, constructive way.

The number of children with access to the internet and to electronic devices has been steadily increasing. The percentage of households with internet access in the EU rose from 55% in 2007 to 87% in 2017, and households with dependent children were more likely to have internet access than those that did not at 96% to 82%. Research from the UK revealed that 50% of children in sampled households had access to 4-10 devices, 32% had access to 11-20 devices, and 9% had access to 20+ devices.

The age at which children first experience technology is also getting lower, with some research suggesting that this happens before the age of two. In the UK, 52% of 3-4 year olds and 82% of 5-7 year olds were already online. Similar studies in the UK found that 73% of parents of 0-4 year olds said their child had been online on a tablet within the past month, 41% had used a smartphone, and 24% had used a laptop or desktop computer.

Finally, some statistics about how competent children have become at using devices. A study in the UK of 0-5 year olds revealed that 65% were able to swipe a touchscreen unassisted and 60% were able to trace shapes and drag items on the screen. However, only 14% were able to purchase items and 61% were unable or unaware of how to do so.

These statistics published by the OECD in 2019 demonstrate the range of activities and the sheer ubiquity of online activity in the world of technology and young children.

We went into the role of screen time in depth in another article, outlining recommendations for each age and helpful dos and don’ts. Both children’s education and entertainment are increasingly screen-based, so screen time can play an essential and beneficial role in our children’s lives as long as we encourage a healthy relationship with our devices from an early age. The key point to keep in mind is to make screen time an intentional and purposeful event in a child’s day and avoid having it idly in the background.

We may not know what every new trend is on social media, but we do know that consuming content and engaging with social media is the main thing young kids are doing online. In our screen time recommendations by age, we suggested that co-viewing and curating content is essential for younger children. However we know that as kids get older, it’s more difficult to supervise exactly what content they’re viewing. That’s why it’s more effective to provide reasonable guidelines that make sense for your household, rather than trying to control everything kids view online. Technology and language are both constantly evolving – the name we used for something when we were kids may be different for our kids today. This article will spell out some of the most common technology terms for kids in ways that they’ll understand, plus some terms that we need to know as well as parents of older kids.

Device
Any piece of electronics equipment, usually something handheld.

Tablet
A portable computer with a screen you can touch and interact with. It’s usually larger than a phone but smaller than a laptop.

Smart (device)
A device is “smart” when it’s connected to other devices in some way. A smartphone is smart because it connects to the internet, and can connect to other smartphones.

Hardware
All the physical parts of a computer or piece of electronic equipment.

Software
All the non-physical parts that make a computer or device run properly, including all the instructions to make it work.

Internet
What we connect to when we go online. It’s everything that’s available when many computers are connected together.

WiFi
Wireless internet! This is available in a specific area where computers and other devices can connect to use the internet without plugging in a cable.

Bluetooth
A way for different devices to connect wirelessly like connecting your phone to a speaker to play music.

URL

OS

This is a special set of instructions used to determine some next step while using a piece of software. For example, an algorithm on YouTube determines what video will play next if you don’t choose one yourself.

Code
This is how we make computers and devices do what we want them to do. It’s a language we use to give instructions to computers.

Programming
This is another word for writing code.

ISP
This is short for internet service provider, or the company that provides internet to your house or wherever you are.

Search engine
A website or online tool that searches the internet for information, usually in the form of another website, images, or videos. For example, Google is the most common search engine, so we often say we “Google” something to search for it online.

Cyberbullying
This is when bullying or harassment happens online. For example, someone could say something mean or inconsiderate about someone else over instant messaging or post something hurtful on social media.

AR
This stands for augmented reality, which is when there’s a computer-generated experience placed on top of the real world. Basically it’s when we use a device to see additional things from a computer on top of what we see with our eyes

VR
This stands for virtual reality, which is when we engage with a completely computer-generated world by using devices like VR goggles over our eyes.

Metaverse
This is the whole universe of all the virtual reality worlds out there.

Meme
Any piece of content from the internet that gets copied and spread quickly and/or becomes a part of culture.

Crypto
Short for cryptocurrency, or a type of money or monetary value that exists entirely online.

UI
This stands for user interface, or all the space where we interact with things on computers and devices.

UX
This stands for user experience, which is how we interact with computers and devices.

IM
Short for instant messaging, which is when you’re talking directly to someone or a group of people online.

DM
Short for direct message, or when you send a private message directly to one person on an app.

A word or phrase with # attached to it on social media, which labels content with a certain topic.

Influencer
Someone on social media who promotes products or services to their followers.
